Man, is this a cute kid or what? I got to be the godfather, which means that I got to sing songs at the ceremony, and later when he's bigger I can try to convince him that his parents aren't really as screwed up as he thinks they are. I'm not exactly sure how I'm supposed to perform my godfatherly duties, but I believe it has something to do being a caring, concerned adult that he can ask things like "is it better to get your nipple pierced or your appendix?" without fear of causing a coronary in the adult in question.
So, now, while he's still a bundle of Joy, this is he.
The ceremony
involved members of his parents' families and their community
giving blessings with glasses of water, and then anointing Tommy
with that water. It was very touching, even though his wonderful
brother Eliot was much more interested in playing trucks in the
sand than the ceremony. Geez, what Could he have been thinking?
Here's
some of Tommy's extended family during the ceremony.
and here
are some more. Ooooh, lotsa lovin. A really great group of people.
It's mandatory
for the godfather to have at least one really bad photo with the
godchild. That way the godchild can blackmail him into forking
out bail at some later date.
The ceremony
ended with the grandparents planting grape vines (one for each
child) below the porch of their house in the cohousing project.
It started to pitter down rain just as we walked up there singing
"Babies are born in the circle of the sun." It seemed
fitting, as if the sky added its blessing by watering the plants.
