Welcome to Tom's kitchen update site!

The links on the left will guide you to the various stages of this ever-expanding, ungodly huge project.

The prep work for this thing has been going on for a long time.  It's taken months to go over floor samples, counter top samples, what to do with the radiator (you'll see in the Before link), what to do with the crummy windows, getting permits, lining up heating contractors, learning about plumbing and wiring and local codes for each of them, on and on and on.

I decided to gut the entire kitchen fairly early on.  The cabinets are not worth the vinyl particleboard they're made of... most of them are simply face frames screwed or nailed to the wall.  Not even proper boxes.  Real home-built jobs.   Roy across the street is a city building inspector, and he was appalled when he saw what the guy was doing... but as a neighborly favor he didn't report him.  Anyway, I'm taking it down to the studs in order to re-do the insulation, the wiring, and to put in  new windows.

Here's the partial laundry list of what's going in:

Maple Cabinets (natural finish, mission style) and hardware
Countertops (I like fireslate, but I'll probably settle for laminate due to cost)
Appliances (stove, fridge, microwave, dishwasher)
Removing old casement windows and installing new double-hungs in new locations (which means wall framing changes and exterior siding changes)
Track lighting
Can lighting
Puck under cabinet lighting
New electrical throughout
Routing gas lines
Routing water for fridge
Flooring (probably the Pergo Siena Stone laminate floor, note that the larger photo shows a different, more gray, floor)
Sink and faucet
Insulation
Taking out a door, framing in the opening
New kickspace heater (this is slick... it replaces the radiator)
New butcher block counter top (home built)

And Lord only knows what else...
